HSS to Select 20 Schools, Donate Software for 2017 USDA Summer Food Programs

Harris School Solutions will provide its School Nutrition software, eTrition, free of charge, to 20 schools in order to support summer programs where schools feed food-insecure children for free.

Bethel Park, PA – Harris School Solutions (HSS), the premier provider of technology solutions for K-12 districts, charter schools, and continuing education programs across North America, announced today that it will donate eTrition software licenses to 20 schools that participate in the USDA’s free summer feeding programs.

The USDA’s programs – including the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and the Seamless Summer Option (SSO) – are meant to support food-insecure students over the summer months. During the school year, these students rely on the 30 million lunches that schools across the country serve each day. Over the summer months, however, these students don’t have access to lunch.

HSS is looking for 20 schools that are planning to participate in these programs and that would benefit from eTrition’s point-of-sale (POS) and reimbursement reporting software. HSS then will donate to each of these schools one license to use eTrition at no cost during the summer months.

eTrition allows users to serve and count meals with one click (and without using a pen and clipboard and having to transcribe data manually) and to easily produce all the reimbursement reports required for submission to the USDA. The software doesn’t require an internet connection to be used during serving (only a compatible tablet or POS station).

According to Dean Rallo, EVP of HSS’ School Nutrition Solutions (SNS) business unit:

“Summer feeding is such an important part of the overall nutrition source for so many kids that I felt we had to get involved. It’s something that I truly believe in and I felt compelled to take actions and help out by doing our part to support those schools that commit to serving over the summer. If we can help even just a small fraction of the schools serving lunch or breakfast to serve more efficiently and get reimbursed properly with less effort or strain on their program over the summer, then it’s worth every penny we’re investing in the program.”

Rallo also pointed out that eTrition training is very straightforward, and that HSS will help schools set up the software solution before the busy summer feeding sessions begin.
